Oral Conscious Sedation Protocol

It has been suggested that you have oral medication prior to your endodontic appointment. This will help ease any anxiety you have regarding your treatment as well as allow your facial muscles to relax so the procedure is more comfortable.

You will not be unconscious for the treatment, but you should feel quite calm and comfortable.

We ask that you follow these instructions:

Do not eat solid foods for a minimum of 8 hours prior to your appointment. Food in your stomach may cause vomiting during or after the procedure. Clear fluids are permitted without pulp and without caffeine (water, apple juice, chicken broth, etc.) up to 3 hours before.

Take your usual medications with a sip of water. If you are a diabetic, taking steroids, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications, please discuss this with our office.

For your safety, equipment will be used to monitor your vital signs during the root canal procedure.  This will include a pulse oximeter attached to your finger and a blood pressure cuff on your arm. Please remove any nail polish (artificial nails, etc.) from your fingernails on your left hand and wear a short sleeved shirt.

It is advisable that you wear loose fitting clothing to this appointment.

Comfortable flat walking shoes should be worn. (No high heels or ‘flip flops’.)

If you are coughing or are congested within 48 hrs of your appointment, please contact our office.  This may not allow us to proceed as planned.

Following your sedated appointment:
You will be kept in the office until your recovery is sufficient to be discharged to the care of a responsible adult. Your driver must be in the office reception area to accompany you out of the office. You will not be permitted to leave your appointment by taxi alone.

Do NOT drive, operate hazardous equipment, machinery, supervise young children alone or make any important decisions for at least 18 hours following your appointment.

Drink plenty of fluids after your appointment. Do not consume alcoholic beverages or take other sedative medication for at least 18 hours or longer if drowsiness persists.

Please note: after hours care can be acquired by calling our office at 519-579-8381. Be sure to leave a message including your name and contact information.
